Select and complete at least 15 units from the Emphasis lists below. Students may meet this requirement through completing five 3-unit courses, or a combination of 3-unit and 4-unit courses that together equal or exceed 15 units. You do NOT need to declare a specific Emphasis and the courses you select do NOT need to be from the same Emphasis list.

(Note that Emphases Electives must be taken from the lists above - the courses below are for informational purposes only).  Premed students should pursue a minor within the Biological Sciences Department and receive advising from them for entry to medical school - a psychology degree will be insufficient without additional required courses.  Students interested in psychiatry must pursue medical training first.

American Institutions: 6 units


The CSU requires all students complete coursework in US History, US Government, and California and local government. For more information on satisfying this requirement, consult American Institutions Courses List . If students satisfy these requirements through GE or major coursework, unrestricted electives may increase. 

University Writing Requirement (UWR): 3 units


Students must complete 3 units of writing-intensive coursework with a grade of C or higher. Students are eligible to take their UWR when they have completed 60 semester units.
