MFE 438/438L - Plastics Engineering I/Laboratory (3/1) Plastic materials and their processing. Review of the pertinent organic chemistry of polymer materials. Classification, properties, characteristics and applications of plastics; polyethylene, PVC, ABS, polyesters, phenolics and urethanes. Study of processes including injection molding, extrusion, thermoforming and blowmolding; applications, process parameters, quality, economics and tooling considerations.
Prerequisite(s): MFE 230/230L or MFE 201/201L or equivalent. Component(s): 3 lectures/problem-solving and 1 three-hour laboratory.
