The Sociology Department at Cal Poly Pomona fosters rigorous study of social life, social change, and the structures that shape human behavior. Grounded in theory, methodology, and content across areas like race, gender, immigration, crime, family, and inequality, the department emphasizes critical analysis of both local and global social dynamics   . Faculty are nationally recognized scholars focused on social justice and inequality, committed to inclusive pedagogy-evident in public support statements affirming LGBTQ+ students and broad course offerings. Whether exploring criminal justice systems, policymaking, or social institutions, the curriculum prepares students with skills in research, data analysis, and applied theory.

Students have multiple pathways: a Bachelor’s in Sociology (General or Social Work) or Criminology, bolstered by minors in related fields. Hands-on learning includes 70-hour field internships at local nonprofits, legal services, schools, and shelters. Annual events like the Lowell Overton Undergraduate Research Symposium feature student-led research in oral and poster formats. Peer mentoring, student organizations, and department-hosted panels such as “Social Movements in the Moment” foster collaboration and civic engagement. Honor societies like Alpha Kappa Delta and Pi Sigma Alpha recognize academic achievement and leadership. Together, these experiences equip students for careers in public administration, social work, law, business, and graduate education.
