The Mathematics & Statistics Department at Cal Poly Pomona cultivates versatility and rigor, supporting both theoretical and applied pursuits. Faculty research spans pure mathematics, statistics, mathematics education, computational science, and consulting-fueling programs accredited by CAC/ABET. Undergraduates can pursue a B.S. degree in Mathematics with options in Applied Mathematics/Statistics or Pure Mathematics with Secondary Teacher Preparation. Graduate students choose from two separate degrees-MS in Mathematics or MS in Statistics and Applied Mathematics-with flexible thesis or exam culminating experience. The department emphasizes practical problem-solving skills, supporting interdisciplinary education and quantitative analysis for careers in industry, government, education, and research.

Students connect with real-world data and statistics through the Consulting Center for Statistics & Applied Mathematics (CCSAM), regional outreach via California Mathematics Project, and collaborative research in the NSF-funded REU. Honors society chapter Kappa Mu Epsilon recognizes academic excellence. Outreach initiatives include “Gift of Numbers,” where students introduce math through games at local schools. The department also provides scholarships, teaching associate roles, and regular colloquia, ensuring strong professional and community connections. This enriching ecosystem empowers students with both advanced analytical training and real-world experience essential for success across diverse careers.
