The mission of the History department is to offer its undergraduate and graduate students-and the broader university-a broad, liberal education that informs them about the particular and global past and the relevance of the past in today’s world. The department trains its majors in the discipline and practice of history and prepares its graduates for careers in education, history, law, business, library science, or the public sector, as well as for graduate study in these fields. The department aims to educate its majors for a life of learning and achievement built upon an awareness and appreciation of the past and its relationship with the present.

The department emphasizes inquiry-driven, interdisciplinary learning rooted in diverse historical perspectives. Students study regions and themes such as California history, the ancient Mediterranean, the history of science, labor, film, and global empires, gaining research and analytical skills through a progression of seminar and thesis experiences. Faculty integrate archival work, digital tools, and historiographic debate into their instruction, encouraging students to explore connections between the past and contemporary challenges.

History majors engage in research, internships, and peer-led programming through the History Club and Phi Alpha Theta. The department also supports student publications, visiting speakers, and advising for credential and graduate study.
