The mission of the EML Department is to provide a superior education in our academic disciplines by cultivating critical and creative thinking and refining communication skills in our students through rigorous study of language, texts, and contexts.

The Department of English and Modern Languages offers an interdisciplinary and intellectually rich environment that engages students in deep, sustained analysis of literature, language, and culture. Rooted in Cal Poly Pomona’s polytechnic ethos, the department fosters a unique blend of scholarly inquiry and real-world application. Whether exploring the politics of language, working across multiple languages and cultures, or studying literature as a tool for social transformation, students are encouraged to think critically, write persuasively, and engage ethically with complex global issues. Faculty bring wide-ranging research and creative expertise into the classroom, encouraging students to examine language in diverse historical, social, and technological contexts.

Students benefit from distinctive experiences such as contributing to faculty research, participating in community-based literacy projects, and working with digital storytelling and archival technologies. The department supports public-facing scholarship and creative work, encouraging students to present at symposia and participate in literary events and performance. The Writing Center and robust advising resources complement these opportunities, preparing students for impactful careers in education, public service, publishing, and more. Through an emphasis on collaboration, social engagement, and interdisciplinary thinking, the department nurtures students prepared to lead and innovate in a multilingual, multicultural world.
