MAT 1940 - Mathematical Concepts for Elementary School Teachers (4) Deep analysis of the Number and Quantity Domain of the Common Core Standards in Mathematics for K-8 students. Deep understanding of numbers systems, the operations among them, their meaning and different algorithms that can be used. Identification of the conceptual foundation for these algorithms. Modeling of the Standards of Mathematical Practice. Emphasis on the use of different representations and different models for mathematical ideas. Discussion of the role of precise language and notation in the development of mathematical thinking. Analysis of different ways of argumentation in mathematics. This course has a field work component.
Prerequisite(s): Category I, Category II, Category III, SAT >=570, MDTP >=14, ALEKS >=46, or ACT >=23; C or better in MAT 12, ESM 12, STA 1200 , STA 120, MAT 1050 , MAT 1060 , MAT 105, or MAT 106; C- or better in MAT 1900 , MAT 1910 , or MAT 191; or C- or better or CR in MAT 1051 .
