Any combination of courses listed below will satisfy the required 24 units. Emphases are listed to provide guidance for helping students to choose courses of interest that best fit your career goals, but there is no requirement for choosing a specific emphasis for fulfilling these units.

Ecology Conservation and Biodiversity (ECB) Emphasis: 24 units


Environmental Microbiology (EM) Emphasis: 24 units


Unrestricted Electives: 9 units


Select a sufficient number of courses so that the total from Major Required, Major Electives, Unrestricted Electives, and Graduation Requirements is at least 120 units.

* Choice depends on Emphasis

** Any General Education A2: Writing Communication credit is an acceptable substitution for ENG 1101  or ENG 1103 .

*** Any General Education A3: Critical Thinking credit is an acceptable substitution for ENG 2105  or PHL 2020 .

**** Students interested in Ecology Conservation and Biodiversity are encouraged to enroll in BIO 2050  and BIO 2050L . Students interested in Environmental Microbiology are encouraged to enroll in BIO 2060  and BIO 2060L .

American Institutions: 6 units


The CSU requires all students complete coursework in US History, US Government, and California and local government. If students satisfy these requirements through GE or major coursework, unrestricted electives may increase. 

University Writing Requirement (UWR): 3 units


Students must complete 3 units of writing-intensive coursework with a grade of C or higher. Students are eligible to take their UWR when they have completed 60 semester units.
