Any combination of courses from the FOUR emphases of electives would satisfy this requirement. Emphases are listed to provide guidance for selecting courses that best fit to your career goals. There is no requirement to declare a specific emphasis. In addition, up to 3 units combined from BIO 4000 , BIO 4410 , BIO 4610 , and BIO 4620  may count towards major electives.

Emphasis 3 - Industrial, Agriculture and Environment: 17 units


Unrestricted Electives: 6 units


Select a sufficient number of courses so that the total from Major Required, Major Electives, Unrestricted Electives, and Graduation Requirements is at least 120 units.

* If you take both BIO 2200 /BIO 2200L  and CHM 2210 /CHM 2210L , the extra credits could count towards your Major Electives units.

** If you take CHM 3270W - Biochemistry I , you will also be taking its 1 unit corequisite CHM 3270LW , which may count towards your Major Electives units.

*** Any General Education A2: Writing Communication credit is an acceptable substitution for ENG 1101  or ENG 1103 .

**** Any General Education A3: Critical Thinking credit is an acceptable substitution for ENG 2105  or PHL 2020 .

American Institutions: 6 units


The CSU requires all students complete coursework in US History, US Government, and California and local government. If students satisfy these requirements through GE or major coursework, unrestricted electives may increase. 

University Writing Requirement (UWR): 3 units


Students must complete 3 units of writing-intensive coursework with a grade of C or higher. Students are eligible to take their UWR when they have completed 60 semester units.
