Offered by: College of Education and Integrative Studies, Liberal Studies Department
This interdisciplinary minor is for anyone who wants a sustainability and education degree emphasis. For those interested in K-12 teaching or similar career pathways, it provides opportunities to develop environmental content knowledge and equitable pedagogical practices that can be applied to the classroom setting and in outdoor spaces like school gardens and playgrounds. For students pursuing non-profit, government, or corporate sector work, the sustainability education minor offers a strong background for careers in parks and recreation, community education, environmental advocacy and education, or informal learning centers like aquariums, museums, zoos, and botanic gardens. Graduates might develop and lead municipal education programs and workshops, create curriculum and programming for non-profit organizations or schools, or teach in a K-12 setting while directing school gardens.
The minor core offers an introduction to environmental issues and a solid foundation in critical approaches to teaching and learning. Then students choose elective courses in Education, Scientific Perspectives on Sustainability, and Cultural and Social Perspectives in Sustainability based on their specific interests and career goals.
