The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering provides advanced studies for graduates willing to further their knowledge in Electrical Engineering.
Mission Statement
The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering program offers state of the art instruction for Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering or closely related graduates who intend to supplement their initial degree. The program is intended mainly for the practicing engineers. It can be used by those students interested in performing applied research or those willing to broaden their knowledge before pursuing higher studies.
Pursuant our Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, the emphasis of the program is on advanced studies with applied training and includes laboratory instruction. Rigorous theoretical background is also provided.
Admission to the Program
Graduate Conditionally Classified
Applicants for unconditional admission are generally expected to have a core upper-division GPA of 3.0 or higher in Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (or equivalent) degree from an accredited or internationally recognized institution. Applicants must also satisfy all other university graduate admission requirements in the graduate studies section of this catalog.
Applicants with core upper-division GPAs below 3.0, but of 2.7 or more are qualified to be considered for conditional admission. A person may be admitted in this category if, in the opinion of appropriate campus authority, he/she can remedy deficiencies by additional coursework but otherwise satisfies all other university requirements for admission. All prerequisites must be specified by the admitting department at the time of student admission. Academic departments are responsible for tracking conditionally admitted students and must report their academic progress to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and the Graduate Studies Office via a memo on a term basis. Students admitted conditionally will not be allowed to concurrently register for graduate courses that are required for the completion of their projected graduate or professional program. A conditionally admitted student’s ability to obtain financial aid is severely limited until all deficiencies have been resolved, and unconditional status is granted by the university. Conditional admission does not guarantee unconditional admission to a program.
Applicants with undergraduate degrees in closely related disciplines, and those who do not fully satisfy other department or university graduate admission requirements may be considered for conditional admission.
Conditionally admitted students must satisfy the specified conditions before being advanced to unconditional standing. Those who do not satisfy these conditions in a timely manner will be dismissed from the program.
To comply with both existing federal regulations and CSU system policy, conditionally admitted students’ financial aid is limited to private loans. Once all deficiencies are resolved and unconditional status is granted by Cal Poly Pomona, students may be eligible for federal and state aid. Conditional admission does not guarantee unconditional admission to a program.
Requirements
The curriculum for the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering degree requires a minimum of 30 semester units of coursework, of which at least 21 units must be in 5000 and 6000 level courses. The program of study consists of 6 units of required breadth courses, a minimum of 18 units of electives, and either a Thesis (4-6 units) or a Master’s Degree Project consisting of 3 units of 1 unit followed by 2 units. Breadth courses are intended to ensure that the student acquires fundamental knowledge. The electives may be chosen from an extensive list of courses in Electrical Engineering and related areas of mathematics, science, and engineering.
To attain Advancement to Candidacy for the degree, the student must satisfy all of the following:
- Completion of all conditions of admission, including any preparatory courses that may have been specified,
- Completion of 22 semester units with a grade point average of at least 3.0,
- Passed the graduation writing test or received a waiver
