There are four emphases for the Master of Science in Mathematics. The Pure Mathematics emphasis is for individuals whose principal interest is in pure mathematics. It is intended for students who are interested in further graduate study. The Applied Mathematics emphasis is intended for students who wish to learn the applications of mathematics, in particular with a goal of working in industry. This program is also appropriate for the individual seeking the community college teaching credential. The Statistics emphasis is for students interested in working in the statistics field. The Mathematics Education emphasis is intended for students interested in teaching at the secondary and post-secondary level, particularly those interested in mathematics education as a profession.

Major Electives: 22-24 units
The remaining units (24 for students who take the comprehensive exam, 22 for thesis) will be chosen from approved lists of courses specific to each emphasis as described below. Any combination of courses listed below will satisfy the required 22-24 units. Emphases are listed to provide guidance for helping students to choose courses of interest that best fit your career goals, but there is no requirement for choosing a specific emphasis for fulfilling these units.
Pure Mathematics Emphasis
Emphasis Recommended: 6 units
Emphasis Other: 16-18 units
Select remaining courses (at least 18 units for comprehensive exam, at least 16 units for thesis) from Categories 1 and 2 below:
Category 1
Select at least 6 units from the following:
Category 2
No more than 6 units of 4000-level courses, and no more than 6 units of MAT 5990 can be counted towards the Master’s degree in this emphasis.
Applied Mathematics Emphasis
Emphasis Recommended: 6 units
Emphasis Other: 16-18 units
Select remaining courses from the list below (at least 18 units for comprehensive exam, at least 16 units for thesis). No more than 4 units of STA courses, no more than 6 units of 4000-level courses, and no more than 6 units of MAT 5990 can be counted towards the Master’s degree in this emphasis.
Statistics Emphasis
At least 18 units of 5000-level coursework must be completed.
Emphasis Recommended: 8 units
Emphasis Other: 14-16 units
Select remaining courses (at least 16 units for comprehensive exam, 14 units for thesis) from Categories 1 and 2 below, taking at least 3 units from each Category.
Mathematics Education Emphasis
Emphasis Recommended: 17 units
Emphasis Other: 5 units
Select at least 5 units from the following. No more than 3 units of MAT 5990 can be counted towards the Master’s degree in this emphasis.
Culminating Experience: 2-4 units
Comprehensive Exam
Students in the Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics emphases may choose to take a comprehensive exam as their culminating experience.
Thesis
Students in the Mathematics Education emphasis to write a thesis as their culminating experience. Additionally, students in the Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics emphases may choose to write a thesis as their culminating experience.
