Nutrition, B.S. - Nutrition Science Subplan/Option: 120 units

Nutrition Science Subplan

Nutritional Science is a subplan under the Foods and Nutrition Major that integrates the core nutrition science courses with additional courses in the laboratory and health sciences. The objective of the Nutrition Science subplan is to provide several preparatory emphases. The Pre-professional emphasis prepares students for a program of study necessary to enter medical, dental, veterinary, Pharm D schools, and graduate programs for the Master of Science, and PhD and or other doctorates. The Animal Nutrition emphasis prepares students for a program of study necessary to enter veterinary and graduate programs for the Master of Science, and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. The Nutrition Science Program will promote an appreciation for the multidiscipline nature of modern nutrition research. The program prepares students with a sound scientific understanding of complex nutrition issues related to research, medicine and health.

Major Required: 74 units


There will be a requirement for graduation - an assessment activity.

* Effective September 20, 2022: Any General Education A1: Oral Communication credit is an acceptable substitution for COM 2204 (A1) .

** Effective September 20, 2022: Any General Education A2: Writing Communication credit is an acceptable substitution for ENG 1103 (A2) .

*** Effective September 20, 2022: Any General Education A3: Critical Thinking credit is an acceptable substitution for ENG 2105 (A3) .

Subplan/Option Electives: 18 units


Any combination of courses listed below will satisfy the required 18 units. Emphases are listed to provide guidance for helping students to choose courses of interest that best fit your career goals, but there is no requirement for choosing a specific emphasis for fulfilling these units.

Animal Nutrition Emphasis:


Unrestricted Electives: 0-3 units


Select a sufficient number of courses so that the total from “Major Required”, “Subplan/Option Required”, “Subplan/Option Electives”, “GE”, and “Unrestricted Electives” is at least 120 units.

General Education Requirements: 48 units


Students should view their Degree Progress Report (DPR) for information regarding their General Education requirements. Unless specific GE courses are required for their major, please refer to the list of approved courses in the General Education Program in the University Catalog, https://catalog.cpp.edu. When viewing the catalog, students should select the catalog year associated with the GE requirements listed in their Degree Progress Report.

At least 3 units from each sub-area and 3 additional units from sub-areas 1 and/or 2

Area D. Social Sciences (9 units)


At least 3 units from each sub-area

Courses that satisfy this requirement may also satisfy GE Areas D1 and D2.

Graduation Writing Test


The Graduation Writing Test (GWT) is suspended until Fall 2023. Students entering Cal Poly Pomona before Fall 2023 are not required to take the Graduation Writing Test.
