The college offers a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management that provides a combination of hospitality management, business, and general education coursework designed to assure that students understand the economic, legal, and social forces that shape the hospitality industry. Major coursework emphasizes qualitative and quantitative analysis, marketing and human resources. The program objectives include team building, unique characteristics of service, guest encounter skills, technology, critical thinking, ethics and leadership. Students work with a faculty mentor to design a series of elective courses to help them focus on individual career goals. Additionally, students learn about the hospitality industry by completing a minimum of 800 required hours of professional work experience prior to graduation.
Student Learning Outcomes of Hospitality Management Undergraduates
Through participation in curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities, including professional work experience and networking with our industry partners, Bachelor of Science Graduates of The Collins College of Hospitality Management will develop the competencies necessary to successfully manage in various hospitality organizations. These competencies include:
- Characteristics of Hospitable Service
Create favorable guest experiences by using professional service management techniques in a hospitality business environment.
- Technological Literacy
Apply current and relevant technologies in a manner designed to enhance organizational performance in a hospitality business environment.
- Analytical Thinking
Make clear and logical decisions by organizing, analyzing, and interpreting information and formulating rational solutions in a hospitality business environment.
- Teamwork
Contribute to positive team performance in a hospitality business environment by appraising and managing one’s team-related competencies, in particular, the knowledge, skills, and attitudes considered transportable from one team to another.
- Leadership
Model the behaviors of effective, ethical leaders by demonstrating the fundamental principles of leadership in a hospitality business environment.

Note(s):
* On the first day of class for HRT 2020 , HRT 2810L , and HRT 3830L , each student must show and carry a valid Food Protection Management Certification from any of the ANSI-CFP Accreditation Programs accepted by the Los Angeles Department of Environmental Health.
** Professional Work Experience (PWE): A minimum of 800-hours of PWE must be completed and documented prior to enrolling in HRT 3410 . The student will complete an approved 800 hours of Professional Work Experience (PWE) in a hospitality industry segment that allows the student to apply classroom knowledge with guided practice. The PWE position will offer a variety of tasks relevant to the student’s career preparation, an opportunity for autonomy, an opportunity to interact with other employees, and an opportunity to engage in management and/or supervisory activities for the employer or host property.
*** For the Food and Beverage Series, the lunch option will require students to take HRT 3830 -01 and HRT 3830L -01 concurrently. The dinner option will require students to take HRT 3830 -02 and HRT 3830L -02 concurrently.
**** For the Lodging Series, students must complete a minimum 200 hours of hotel/lodging-specific PWE (may be part of overall PWE) prior to enrolling in HRT 3930 .
Major Electives: 9 units
Any course taken in the Major Required may not be used to also satisfy an Elective. Of the 9 units of Electives, at least 3 units must be 4000-level HRT and up to 3 units may be advisor-approved non-HRT courses. If any advisor-approved non-HRT course or the one HRT Elective course listed below is used to satisfy a GE requirement, then the Unrestricted Elective units may be more than 3 units. Every HRT student must earn at least 120 units to satisfy the degree requirements.

HRT 2000 , HRT 2990 , HRT 4000 , and HRT 4990 may be applied to this area; consult with your faculty advisor for further details and petition approval.
Unrestricted Electives: 3-6 units
Select a sufficient number of courses so that the total from “Major Required”, “GE”, and “Unrestricted Electives” is at least 60 units.
General Education Requirements: 48 units

Unless specific courses are required, please refer to the list of approved courses under General Education Requirements, Areas A through E.

Interdisciplinary General Education: 21 units
An alternate pattern for partial fulfillment of GE Areas A, C, and D available for students is the Interdisciplinary General Education (IGE) program. Students should see an advisor for specific GE coursework required by their major. Please refer to the University Catalog General Education Program section for additional information.

Graduation Writing Test
All persons who receive undergraduate degrees from Cal Poly Pomona must pass the Graduation Writing Test (GWT). The test must be taken by the semester following completion of 60 units for undergraduates.
