The Master of Science degree in Chemistry provides a comprehensive understanding of the principles of chemistry and its application to solve advanced problems. This understanding will be gained through course work, seminar, independent study and research. The program is designed to provide the student with the necessary skills and techniques to reach the applicant’s particular objective, whether it is for a successful career in teaching or industry or to pursue further graduate work. The student in this program may pursue one of several fields of specialization that include analytical, inorganic, organic, physical chemistry and biochemistry.

Curriculum

Major Required: 7 units

CHM 5500 - Advanced Chemical Communication (1) (take 1-unit course twice in two different semesters. Total of 2 units is required.)
CHM 5510L - Advanced Instrumental Analysis Laboratory (2)
CHM 5520 - Advanced Chemical Equilibria and Kinetics (3)

Major Electives: 17 units

A minimum of 17 units selected from 5000-level CHM electives, 4000-level CHM electives (limited to 7 units) and CHM 6910 (limited to 3 units).

Culminating Experience: 6 units

CHM 6940 - Master’s Thesis Research (1-2) (4 units required)
CHM 6960 - Master’s Thesis (1-2) (2 units required)
