Successful completion of History - Pre-Credential Option meets the subject matter competency requirement for prospective teachers seeking a California Single Subject Credential in Social Sciences. All students seeking a teaching career should immediately see Dr. Michael Slaughter, History Department, for guidance. Note that the Option Required courses will also fulfill most of the student’s GE requirements.

Subplan/Option Electives: 24 units
Area Studies Emphasis: 9 units
Select 9 units from the following list with consent of advisor. Some upper division history courses may count in any emphasis.
US History Emphasis: 6 units
Select 6 units from list with consent of advisor. Some upper division history courses may count in any emphasis.
European History Emphasis: 9 units
Select 9 units from list with consent of advisor. Some upper division history courses may count in any emphasis.

Select a sufficient number of courses so that the total from “Major Required”, “Subplan/Option Required”, “Subplan/Option Electives”, “GE”, and “Unrestricted Electives is at least 120 units.

Graduation Writing Test
All persons who receive undergraduate degrees from Cal Poly Pomona must pass the Graduation Writing Test (GWT). The test must be taken by the semester following completion of 60 units for undergraduates.
