The college offers a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management that provides a combination of hospitality management, business, and general education coursework designed to assure that students understand the economic, legal, and social forces that shape the hospitality industry. Major coursework emphasizes qualitative and quantitative analysis, marketing and human resources. The program objectives include team building, unique characteristics of service, guest encounter skills, technology, critical thinking, ethics and leadership. Students work with a faculty mentor to design a series of elective courses to help them focus on individual career goals. Additionally, students learn about the hospitality industry by completing a minimum of 800 required hours of professional work experience prior to graduation.

Through participation in curricular and co-curricular learning opportunities, including professional work experience and networking with our industry partners, Bachelor of Science Graduates of The Collins College of Hospitality Management will develop the competencies necessary to successfully manage in various hospitality organizations. Required Core Courses for Major: 63 units

Required of all students. A 2.0 cumulative GPA is required in all courses for the major in order to receive a degree in the major.

Note(s):

* Professional Work Experience (PWE): A minimum of 800-hours of PWE must be completed and documented prior to enrolling in HRT 341 . Collins College students must perform a minimum of 800 hours of PWE, with 400 of the hours performed in residence. PWE is hospitality-specific industry work performed after high school graduation. Document PWE on company letterhead and letter(s) should show the total hours worked and explain the student’s job description(s) and related duties. Faculty recommend that PWE show growth in knowledge and skills above those of an entry-level employee.

** HRT 382 and HRT 383L must be taken in two consecutive quarters. When students enroll in HRT 382 , they must select one of two options available. The lunch option will require students to take HRT 382 -01 and HRT 383L -01. The dinner option will require students to take HRT 382 -02 and HRT 383L -02.

*** HRT 304 and HRT 390 are prerequisites to HRT 393 /HRT 393L . Students must complete a minimum 200 hours of hotel/lodging-specific PWE (may be part of overall PWE) prior to enrolling in HRT 393 /HRT 393L .

Required Support Courses: 17 units

Some major support courses should be used to satisfy the indicated GE requirements. If these courses are not used to satisfy GE, the total units to degree may be more than 180 units.

Elective Support Courses: 28 units

Of the 28 units required in this section, at least 4 units must be 400-level HRT, and 12 units may be advisor-approved non-HRT courses.

Unrestricted Electives: 4-12 units

Interdisciplinary General Education: 32 units

An alternate pattern for partial fulfillment of GE Areas A, C, D, and E available for students is the Interdisciplinary General Education (IGE) program. Students should see an advisor for specific GE coursework required by their major. Students must be exempt from or score at least 147 on the EPT to qualify for IGE. Please refer to the University Catalog General Education Program section for additional information.

Graduation Writing Test

All persons who receive undergraduate degrees from Cal Poly Pomona must pass the Graduation Writing Test (GWT). The test must be taken by the quarter following completion of 120 units for undergraduates.
