Our mission is to educate by linking theory and practice and inspire Cal Poly Pomona students and the wider community through: excellence in teaching, a cohesive, rigorous, lab‑intensive curriculum, one‑on‑one advising and mentoring, participation in research and scholarly activities, collaboration with and outreach to local industries and educational institutions, and support of extracurricular student activities.
The Chemistry & Biochemistry Department emphasizes a polytechnic, “learn-by-doing” approach, where students engage in extensive laboratory study using advanced instrumentation-such as FT‑NMR, GC‑MS, LC‑MS, X‑ray diffractometers, and confocal microscopes. With three undergraduate subplans-American Chemical Society, Biochemistry, and a flexible General option-and a master’s program grounded in thesis research, students build a robust foundation for diverse careers. Faculty members not only teach, but also model the teacher‑scholar ethos through active research, frequently collaborating with local industries and winning grants (e.g., CSUBIOTECH awards).
Students benefit from rich experiential learning: undergraduate research, co-op placements, and senior thesis projects spanning one to two years. The department hosts SMACS (Student Members of ACS) for professional development, and students can secure paid research positions via grants or earn course credit through internships. The curriculum integrates academic advising and connects students to community outreach and lab-intensive experiences. Whether through hands-on experimentation, close mentorship, or real-world collaborations, students leave well-prepared for graduate school or careers as industry scientists, educators, and researchers.
