Our mission is to educate and mentor students through inquiry-driven, hands-on learning in the biological sciences. We prepare undergraduates and graduate students for lifelong academic growth and productive careers in a diverse, technical world.
The Biological Sciences Department embraces a culture of curiosity, integrity, collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation. Faculty serve as internationally recognized teacher‑scholars, integrating evolving curricula with classroom, laboratory, field, and computational experiences. Students choose from majors in Biology, Biotechnology, and Environmental Biology, supported by minors in Botany, Microbiology, and Zoology. Research-active faculty publish and receive awards, and undergraduates contribute to peer-reviewed publications, thesis projects, and the annual Graduate Symposium.
Students engage in experiential learning through state-of-the-art facilities-greenhouses, confocal microscopy rooms, BioTrek Rainforest and Mesozoic Garden learning centers-and conduct field research on campus and in regional ecosystems. The program supports internships and summer research via NSF, NIH, Amgen, and CSU REU programs. Student groups and honor societies include Beta Beta Beta, Biotechnology Club, Microbiology Club, Zoologists of Cal Poly, Biological Sciences Club, Pre‑Pharmacy Club, and Journal Clubs, fostering community, leadership, and professional development.
