The Philosophy Department at Cal Poly Pomona has organized its programs to meet both the abstract and the practical philosophical interests of its students. Our programs allow students to pursue the traditional questions about the nature of truth, knowledge, justice, and reality while examining the relevance of these questions to the problems of contemporary society.
Rooted in rigorous inquiry and critical analysis, the department fosters an inclusive, intellectually vibrant culture that bridges theory and real-world application. Through its Anglo-American analytic tradition and contemporary orientations, students cultivate high-level reasoning, clear communication, and ethical reflection-skills that are regularly praised as assets in careers such as law, business, education, and public service. The department’s faculty engages both pure philosophical research and applied investigations-such as bioethics and social justice-often collaborating with students on campus-wide initiatives. This commitment to a “learn-by-doing” approach is reflected in experiential classroom formats like the Ethics Bowl, where students grapple with complex moral dilemmas.
Philosophy students benefit from a lively co-curricular ecosystem. The annual World Philosophy Day celebration draws over 200 participants and features panels, Ethics Bowl demos, alumni networking, and research showcases. The department also supports the Undergraduate Journal of Ethics, Policy, and Social Justice, a student-published forum for original scholarship . Membership in active student groups like the Ethics Bowl team and Philosophy Club provides chances to develop public speaking, event planning, and professional networking skills. These experiences, together with mentoring from faculty and alumni, position students for success in graduate studies, law school, and policy-related careers.
