The Department of Economics provides a broad framework of economic and policy analysis; presents concepts as they apply to interaction in the local, regional, national, and global economies; and is committed to the advancement of knowledge and learning in the field of economics as a social science. It supports the intellectual, personal, and professional development of its Majors, Minors, and Graduate students by preparing students for life, leadership, and careers in a changing, multicultural world through the process of learning and application in a polytechnic university setting. Critical thinking and analytical reasoning is encouraged at all levels and quantitative analysis using current tools and methods emphasized. The Department provides a learning opportunity for students in an environment of collegiality, collaboration, and enthusiasm for learning within the local as well as the global community.

The Department of Economics provides a flexible, interdisciplinary education grounded in economic theory and quantitative analysis. The curriculum supports both professional preparation and academic advancement, offering pathways to careers in the private and public sectors as well as graduate study in economics, business, law, public policy, and data science. Faculty integrate applied learning and research to ensure that students develop strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills that are valued across industries and disciplines. The department emphasizes the relevance of economic reasoning in understanding and addressing complex societal issues.

Students majoring in economics gain foundational knowledge in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and applied fields, while pursuing individualized interests through electives and independent study. The department also offers a minor that complements other majors by enhancing students’ analytical skills and marketability. Students participate in research with faculty, pursue internships, and have access to advising that supports both academic and professional goals. These experiences prepare graduates to enter a wide range of fields including finance, government, consulting, and education.
