The Communication Department’s mission is to educate and encourage students to effectively communicate through oral, written, and electronic media in a multicultural society, and to prepare students for communication positions in mass media, business, government, education, and nonprofit organizations-sectors vital to the growth and maintenance of a democratic society.

The department promotes a polytechnic, practice-based education grounded in the liberal arts and social sciences. Through its three subplans-Communication Studies, Multimedia Journalism, and Public Relations-students explore the relationship between communication and culture, institutions, and technology. Faculty combine professional experience with academic research, creating a learning environment that supports digital storytelling, critical media analysis, and strategic communication. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, ethical practice, and analytical and creative expression in service of public discourse.

Students gain professional experience by writing for The Poly Post, developing public relations campaigns, and participating in internships across media, nonprofit, and corporate sectors. They build networks through events like COM Day and Alumni Night and are supported by student chapters of national organizations such as the Society of Professional Journalists and the Public Relations Student Society of America. These experiences prepare graduates to enter dynamic fields with practical skills, cultural fluency, and professional confidence.
