The College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences (CLASS) embodies Cal Poly Pomona’s mission to provide a comprehensive polytechnic education by integrating humanistic inquiry, civic engagement, and interdisciplinary exploration. Home to an award-winning Model United Nations team, The Poly Post student newspaper, a Mariachi ensemble, and an extensive production schedule at the University Theater, CLASS reflects the campus’s commitment to the intellectual and creative life of the university.
CLASS reflects a strong emphasis on public-facing scholarship and high-impact practices. Students engage directly with community partners through service-learning courses in Sociology, internships in Political Science and Psychology, public history projects that center local narratives and cultural preservation, and social justice work. CLASS students frequently present their work at regional and national conferences, supported by the college’s commitment to undergraduate research and faculty mentorship.
CLASS faculty are principal organizers of numerous centers and initiatives, including the California Center for Ethics and Policy, the Center for Geographic Information Science Research (CGISR), the Weglyn Endowed Chair for Multicultural Studies, the Office of Interdisciplinary Ethnic Studies, the Democracy Institute, and the Digital Humanities Consortium. Each initiative provides a distinct platform for interdisciplinary research, public discourse, and community engagement.
Graduates of CLASS demonstrate advanced capabilities in critical analysis, written and oral communication, intercultural competence, and ethical reasoning. These skills support diverse career trajectories in education, public service, media, the arts, and nonprofit leadership. Many students also pursue advanced degrees in law, counseling, or the humanities and social sciences. The college’s emphasis on creativity, civic responsibility, and collaboration prepares students to lead in complex and evolving professional environments.
