The mission of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning is to prepare students to become planning professionals by providing a multi-disciplinary professional education that teaches students to define issues, solve problems, and implement solutions to improve the quality of the natural and built environment, in ways that promote social justice and are rooted in an understanding of social change.

The department emphasizes student-centered, hands-on learning grounded in Cal Poly Pomona’s “become by doing” philosophy. Students engage with real-world planning challenges through field work, design studios, and studios in GIS, climate adaptation, land-use law, and environmental assessment. With strong interdisciplinary ties to architecture, landscape architecture, and regenerative studies, the department fosters collaboration across environmental design disciplines. It holds national accreditation from the Planning Accreditation Board and receives high marks for teaching quality, professional readiness, and commitment to social equity.

Students benefit from community-engaged capstone studios, internships with local agencies, and global experiences like Japan studio programs. Professional development is supported through active student chapters of the American Planning Association (APSA), the Graduate Planning Student Association, and events like the Dale Prize colloquium. Additional resources include a GIS lab, dedicated advising, laptop requirements to ensure tech readiness, outreach through alumni networks, and strong post-graduation placement in public, private, and nonprofit sectors.
