Our polytechnic, hands-on landscape architecture education empowers students with the knowledge, skills, and values to succeed in careers that shape the natural and built environments through design. We work with community partners on real-world solutions toward social, environmental, and climate justice in Southern California and beyond.
The Department of Landscape Architecture offers nationally accredited undergraduate and graduate degrees (BSLA and MLA) rooted in a studio-based curriculum that integrates ecological literacy, technical skill, and design thinking. Students engage deeply with principles of sustainability, urban resilience, and social equity through coursework in site engineering, planting design, history, theory, and digital communication. Faculty are scholar-practitioners involved in research and community partnerships that address climate-responsive design and public space planning. The department fosters a creative, inclusive, and justice-oriented culture that challenges students to design for both environmental function and cultural meaning.
Students participate in hands-on fieldwork across Southern California, design studios centered on real sites, and interdisciplinary collaborations with professionals. Studio culture is reinforced by critique, peer learning, and iterative design. Student involvement is strong in the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) student chapter and Sigma Lambda Alpha honor society. Field trips, internships, and professional mentoring are integrated throughout the curriculum. These experiences prepare graduates to pursue licensure and build careers in public and private practice, urban design, environmental restoration, and community-based planning.
