Through teaching excellence and program quality the Department of Art continues to align itself with the University mission to cultivate success through a diverse culture of experiential learning, discovery, and innovation. The department is dedicated to creativity, environmental and social awareness, and ethical design practices.

Building on these values, the Department of Art-offering a B.F.A. in Visual Communication Design and a B.A. in Art History-is fully accredited by NASAD and emphasizes Cal Poly Pomona’s signature “learn-by-doing” approach. In design studios and art history lectures and seminars, students engage with environmental and ethical issues through hands-on projects, research collaboration, and service learning. Department faculty are active practitioners and scholars whose work enriches curriculum relevance and professional rigor. The Visual Communication Design program is noted for its regional standing-including rankings among California’s top design schools-and Art History is noted for its award-winning faculty.

Student engagement is central: visual design majors participate in juried exhibitions, an annual industry showcase, and internships with leading LA-area firms. Student organizations such as AIGA‑CPP facilitate industry connections through speaker events, portfolio reviews, and competitions. Art History students contribute to departmental newsletters, archival projects, and mentoring. Rigorous advising, studio critique culture, digital fabrication labs, and access to galleries like Kellogg University Art Gallery round out the comprehensive support systems that help students explore careers in design, museums, cultural institutions, and academia.
