As a professional program in architecture, the mission of this department is to advocate for the broader purposes of architecture-including its public significance, its role in creating sustainable environments, and its provision of service to society through graduates who are responsible professionals, motivated by a sense of civic engagement.

Situated within a learn-by-doing polytechnic ethos, the Department of Architecture blends intensive studio practice with theory, history, and technology. The curriculum progresses from foundational design studios to upper-division topic studios and a capstone senior project, always integrating sustainability, inclusive design, and social equity. Interdisciplinary collaboration is a hallmark-students engage in topic studios that intersect with health-care design, transit-oriented development, mass timber, and more, drawing on partnerships with landscape architecture, engineering, theater, and hospitality disciplines. The department consistently ranks among the top programs nationally and prepares students through digital fabrication labs, professional electives, and accreditation by NAAB and CIDA.

Students gain real-world experience via internships, 500-hour NCARB AXP-qualified practica, and global study-abroad exchanges. They regularly showcase work in high-profile exhibitions-2x8 Invitational, Architecture at Zero-and receive recognition at DesignIntelligence rankings. Studio culture thrives in dedicated fabrication, print, and wood shops; peer reviews, community-engaged projects, and professional networks enrich the academic journey. The department also hosts the prestigious Neutra Medal series and maintains ties to practicing architects, further extending opportunities for mentorship and civic engagement.
