The Mission of the IME Department is to graduate outstanding industrial and manufacturing engineering professionals who are prepared to succeed in today’s workplace or the best graduate schools. Our students are trained to help organizations design and improve systems that produce products and services, organize people to work effectively, and ensure that customers are best served-the human side of engineering. We strive to serve a diverse student population using the ‘learn‑by‑doing’ approach to cultivate the ethics, skills, and abilities they need to serve, innovate, and lead in society and industry.
The department delivers ABET-accredited BS degrees in Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering, as well as MS degrees in Engineering Management and Systems Engineering. Grounded in Cal Poly Pomona’s polytechnic philosophy, students learn through intensive lab work-from CNC machining and robotics to foundry processes, simulation, and ergonomics-integrated with engineering math, quality control, and process optimization. Faculty maintain strong industry relationships, steering current curricula, conducting applied research, and fostering a culture of professional growth. This approach empowers future engineers to enhance production systems, improve quality, lead teams, and innovate in sectors ranging from manufacturing and healthcare to logistics and entertainment.
Students gain early hands-on experience in state-of-the-art labs-such as additive manufacturing, systems simulation, and human factors-and progress to senior capstones solving real-world problems. They participate in student chapters like IISE, SME, and honor societies (e.g. α π μ) that offer competitions, networking, and leadership training. Graduate students engage with industry-responsive research projects and flexible engineering management studies. Internship and advisory support help students build career-ready competencies, ethical leadership, and inclusive teamwork-preparing them to excel in engineering, management, and systems-oriented professions.
