The department’s mission is to meet the challenges of an evolving society, we provide practice‑oriented civil engineering education that fosters personal, professional and social responsibility; technical excellence and creativity; and effective communication, teamwork and leadership.
The department upholds Cal Poly Pomona’s polytechnic commitment by delivering ABET‑accredited programs in Civil Engineering (with options in General, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering) and Construction Engineering & Management. Grounded in hands‑on, real-world education, students learn to plan, design, build, operate, and manage critical infrastructure-from bridges and water treatment plants to highways and urban developments. Faculty, many of whom maintain strong ties with regional industry and government agencies, enrich the curriculum through applied research, industry-case collaborations, and cutting-edge solutions in environmental resilience, geospatial analysis, and sustainable construction. This dynamic, practice-focused culture fosters creativity, ethical professionalism, and inclusive teamwork in line with modern engineering demands.
Students engage in experiential learning through field labs, construction site visits, surveying projects, and capstone design courses. They access industry-standard software, surveying equipment, and structural testing facilities. Active student chapters-including American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), and honor society Chi Epsilon-provide opportunities for competitions, workshops, site tours, and professional mentorship. Internships with engineering consultancies, municipal agencies, contractors, and environmental firms foster career readiness from day one. The construction program additionally offers scholarships and collaborates closely with organizations like Associated General Contractors (AGC), Construction Management Association of America (CMAA), Design Build Institute of America (DBIA), and North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT). Through integrated academic advising, these resources support preparation for licensure and leadership roles in civil engineering, construction management, surveying, and infrastructure development.
