Our mission is to prepare graduates who will contribute effectively to an interconnected global society by providing them with a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals, excellent hands-on engineering skills, and extensive training in communication and teamwork.
The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering embodies Cal Poly Pomona’s polytechnic ethos, emphasizing theory, laboratory practice, and applied learning. Chemical Engineering students design sustainable processes for industries such as petrochemicals to pharmaceuticals, addressing environmental and ethical considerations. Materials Engineering students develop metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites for applications in energy, electronics, and structural systems. Faculty-led research prepares graduates for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, sustainability, advanced materials, and process innovation.
Students engage in real-world learning through laboratories in unit operations, process control, materials characterization, and transport phenomena, using industry-standard tools. In senior capstone projects, multidisciplinary teams tackle engineering challenges. Co-curricular organizations including AIChE, ChemE-Car, Material Advantage, ISPE, and AMPP offer community, leadership, and professional networking. Internships, along with faculty-mentored research, enrich students’ development and prepare them for engineering careers.
