As a diverse learning community, we are committed to a comparative and expansive examination of race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality and the ways they are constituted and transformed over time. We prepare students to manage, nurture, advocate for, and shape an open democratic society where diversity is valued and social justice principles are embodied.

The Department of Ethnic & Women’s Studies (EWS) empowers students to understand and analyze the complex intersections of identities through an interdisciplinary lens encompassing history, culture, and contemporary social issues. With curricular pathways including African American Studies, Asian Pacific Islander Studies, Chicana/o Latina/o Studies, Native American Studies, and Gender & Sexuality Studies, EWS cultivates a scholarly culture rooted in social justice and critical consciousness. Faculty actively engage students with community-based research and service-learning, integrating theory with practice in meaningful and transformative ways.

Students in EWS benefit from immersive experiences via service-learning courses, internships, and a senior capstone project that emphasizes community engagement. Programs like the NATIVE Pipeline provide mentorship and support for Native American students, linking K-12 outreach with university-level success. The Gender, Ethnicity, and Multicultural Student (GEMS) Club and the Diversity Ambassador Program, along with campus cultural centers, host workshops, cultural events, and advocacy campaigns that enhance civic leadership and academic identity. Through collaborative work and experiential learning, graduates leave equipped with analytical skills, cultural empathy, and the ability to address equity and power imbalances in professional, educational, and community settings.
