The Department’s mission is to fully prepare students with the skill set that is required for career success in plant-based agriculture in the 21st century.

The department embodies Cal Poly Pomona’s polytechnic values through a curriculum grounded in sustainability, ethical land stewardship, and applied agricultural science. Faculty actively mentor students across diverse fields, including horticulture, agronomy, pest management, urban agriculture, and soil science. Courses incorporate sustainability science and social responsibility, with required coursework in ethics and sustainability. Department culture is defined by interdisciplinary collaboration, inclusive teaching, and a commitment to advancing equity and environmental justice. Research and instruction are supported by faculty expertise in controlled-environment agriculture, hydroponics, agroecology, and beekeeping.

Students engage in hands-on learning across 150 acres of farmland at Spadra Farm, 46,000 square feet of greenhouse space, a certified organic micro-farm, on-campus crop plots, and the department-managed apiary. The Center for Turfgrass, Irrigation, and Landscape Technology (CTILT) supports student research and training in landscape management, climate-smart plant selection, and water conservation. Students participate in national intercollegiate competitions in crops, soils, irrigation, and entomology, and hold internships with growers, landscape firms, and irrigation consulting companies. Instructionally related clubs and faculty-mentored employment and research ensure graduates are equipped for leadership roles in agriculture, environmental management, and the green industries.
