Our Department’s mission is to provide state‑of‑the‑art instructional and research programs. The Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences endeavors to train all AVS and AHS majors, and minors to understand and critically evaluate food animal and companion animal production, nutrition, health, and physiology.
The department is deeply rooted in Cal Poly Pomona’s polytechnic “become by doing” tradition, blending biological science with real-world animal husbandry. Students work across 330 acres of rangeland, 100 acres of irrigated pasture, and specialized labs for meat, wool, and production - including exposure to cattle, sheep, goats, swine, and Arabian horses. The curriculum includes pathways for pre-veterinary preparation, general animal science, and a separate animal health science program, reflecting the department’s comprehensive approach. Faculty engage in applied research and industry partnerships, advancing areas like nutrition, breeding, physiology, and biotechnology.
Students enjoy a wide range of hands-on resources: teaching farms, nutrition and anatomy labs, the Arabian Horse Center, and externships such as the Santa Anita racetrack equine internship. Student groups like Pre-Vet and Livestock Club facilitate leadership, networking, and scholarship opportunities, while field placements with producers, USDA facilities, or veterinary clinics enable graduates to launch careers across veterinary, agricultural, biotech, and public health fields. Graduate students may pursue an M.S. in Agriculture with thesis-based research and industrial internships.
