An increasingly complex society needs individuals to inform, interpret, and explain to the public, stakeholders, and diverse audiences the various issues, challenges, and policies that industries, governments, and communities navigate in today’s mediated world. The Communication major prepares students to address this challenge and fill positions in mass media, business, government,  education, and the nonprofit sector.

Students select one of three subplans to complete the major - Communication Studies, Multimedia Journalism, and Public Relations.

The Communication Studies Subplan prepares students for careers in corporate training, research analysis, consulting, and organizational development through foundational theory and research methods that analyze how communication shapes human interaction across interpersonal, organizational, and cultural contexts. You will develop critical thinking and analytical skills while exploring how communication influences social dynamics and decision-making processes.

The Multimedia Journalism Subplan prepares students for careers in editorial and supervisory assignments with news organizations, nonprofits, magazines, industrial publications, online and broadcast media. You will develop a digital storytelling portfolio while learning essential writing, reporting, video, and multimedia production skills to create compelling content for diverse platforms and audiences.

The Public Relations Subplan prepares students for careers in nonprofit, corporate, and government sectors by equipping them with strategic communication skills and industry best practices through hands-on experiences such as campaign development, event planning, media relations training, and crisis management simulations. Students will learn to craft compelling messages, build relationships with stakeholders, and utilize analytics to measure communication effectiveness while gaining practical experience through internships and client-based projects.

The Communication Department offers minors in Communication Studies, Multimedia Journalism, and Public Relations.

The Communication Department sponsors the student newspaper, The Poly Post, which is available both in print and online at ThePolyPost.com.  The Department also supports annual networking events, including Alumni Night and COM Day, and campus chapters of student-led professional organizations such as the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) and the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).
