A four-year curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science with subplans in Pre-veterinary Science/Graduate School, and Animal Science (general). Animal Health Science is also offered by the department as a separate major for those interested in veterinary nursing.
Specialized laboratories are provided for meat, wool, and animal production. The department maintains 330 acres of range land and 100 acres of irrigated pasture. Livestock includes a breeding herd of Angus and Angus Crossbred cattle; flocks of sheep (Suffolk, Hampshire, Dorper, Dorset, Blackface), goats (Boer), and a herd of various commercial breeds of swine (Yorkshire, Hampshire, Berkshire, Duroc). Kellogg Arabian horses are located at the Arabian Horse Center which has close collaborations with the department.
A Master of Science degree in Agriculture with an option in Animal Science is offered. Specializations available within the degree are animal nutrition, animal breeding, animal behavior/welfare, and animal physiology.
Location of the university provides rich opportunities for students to obtain specialized and practical educational experience in production, management, feeding, marketing and processing. Cooperation of prominent local breeders, feeders, producers, marketing organizations and related animal industries offers additional opportunity for field study.
The Pre-veterinary Science/Graduate School option meets requirements for admission to most schools of veterinary medicine, related medical technical fields, and for graduate studies with animals in areas of nutrition, meat science, breeding, physiology, and biotechnology.
The Animal Science (general) option is designed to prepare students for careers in animal related fields other than Veterinary Medicine. These include USDA, animal industries, animal feed companies, biotech companies and other related industries. The option combines course work in a variety of species and specialties in order to have a broad background in the animal sciences.
