The degree, Bachelor of Architecture, is offered in a five-year curriculum, which focuses on the design laboratory. The design studio sequence consists of three segments: 1) A three-year basic core; 2) a technology-intensive topic studio taken in spring of fourth year, and two semesters of topic studios taken jointly by fourth- and fifth-year students; and 3) a culminating senior project taken over two semesters.
The degree, Master of Architecture, is offered in a three-year curriculum. For additional information regarding the graduate program, refer to the Graduate Studies section of this catalog.
The majority of course work within the Department of Architecture is open only to those students who have been admitted to the Department and are designated Architecture majors. Three Architecture history/theory courses are also listed as GE courses satisfying Areas C1, C2, and C3; these courses are open to students in other majors. Additionally, the Department is responsible for ARC 1010 GE Area E, which is also open to students in other majors.
All work produced may be collected and used for the promotion of the department and its programs. Students will always be credited. Students may post their schoolwork elsewhere if they credit the degree program, course, and responsible faculty.
All undergraduate and graduate students entering College of Environmental Design majors are required to purchase a laptop computer that meets departmental specifications. All applicants are invited to check with their department office or go to the department’s website to obtain these specifications. Students qualifying for financial aid may submit a request with the financial aid office to add the cost of the laptop to their overall Cost of Attendance by completing a Cost of Attendance Appeal Form by following instructions on the Appeals web page: https://www.cpp.edu/financial-aid/resources/appeals.shtml. Prior to graduation, all students are required to register for NCARB AXP and fulfill 500 hours of NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards). All students record internship hours in preparation for licensure as an Architect. For more information, please see the department website.
The Department of Architecture is a member of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Courses are taught by a faculty of professionals engaged in practice, education, and research.
In the United States, most registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), which is the sole agency authorized to accredit professional degree programs in architecture offered by institutions with U.S. regional accreditation, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted an eight-year term, an eight-year term with conditions, or a two-year term of continuing accreditation, or a three-year term of initial accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established education standards. Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs may require a non-accredited undergraduate degree in architecture for admission. However, the non-accredited degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree.
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, College of Environmental Design, Department of Architecture offers the following NAAB-accredited degree programs:
Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch.,150 undergraduate semester credits)
Master of Architecture (M.Arch., non-pre-professional degree + 90 semester credits)
Accreditation visits for both programs occurred in March 2023 and both the Master and Bachelor programs received an eight-year term of accreditation. The next continuing accreditation visit is scheduled for 2030.
Admission to the Program
Because the program offered by the Department of Architecture is oversubscribed, applications are accepted only during the initial filing period of October 1 - November 30. As a result of state impaction requirements, the department admits only a small number of applicants who are not residents of California to the undergraduate program.
All candidates must meet regular University admission standards as well as additional standards required by the Department of Architecture. Among other requirements, transfer applicants to Architecture must complete all their “Golden Four” courses (Oral Communication, Written Communication, Critical Thinking, and Mathematics/Quantitative Reasoning) with a grade of “C” or better. These courses shall all have been completed by the end of the spring semester in which the student applies to the program (ex: by the end of spring 2024 for entrance in fall 2025).
