An increasingly complex society needs individuals to inform, interpret, and explain to the public the problems of that society. The Communication major prepares students to address this challenge and fill positions in mass media, business, government, and education.

Students select one of four subplans to complete the major-Interpersonal Communication, Multimedia Journalism, Organizational Communication, and Public Relations.

The Interpersonal Communication subplan provides students with the skills to enter a variety of professions that require the ability to analyze communication patterns and propose solutions to enhance the quality of human interaction. It is especially useful for students planning to enter careers in education, counseling, and human resources or attend graduate school.

The Multimedia Journalism Subplan is designed for students planning careers in editorial and supervisory assignments with new organizations, magazines, industrial publications, and broadcast media. Students learn essential writing, reporting, video, and multimedia production skills.

The Organizational Communication Subplan is for students who wish to emphasize interpersonal and intercultural communication in preparation for careers in business/industry, government, and education. This option is especially useful for students planning to enter graduate or professional school.

The Public Relations Subplan prepares students for careers in public relations, advertising, and human resource management. Students learn how to produce brochures, newsletters, and press kits as well as gain practical experience in event planning and multimedia communication.

The Communication Department offers minors in Communication Studies, Multimedia Journalism, and Public Relations.

The Communication Department sponsors the student newspaper, The Poly Post, which is available both in print and online at ThePolyPost.com.  The Department also supports annual professional networking events, including Alumni Night and COM Day.
