The Sociology major, which is housed in the Department of Sociology, is designed to provide a substantial foundation in theoretical, methodological, and content areas of sociology, leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. In addition to a solid introduction in these content areas, students receive specific training in survey research and statistical analysis, and in the many practical applications of sociological theory. The Sociology major has two subplans: Social Work and General Sociology. The major is an excellent preparation for graduate study in Sociology, or Public Administration, and for professional studies in law or social work. It also provides a very good background for entry level positions in management, in both public and private sectors.

The Criminology major is a program that focuses on the systematic study of crime as a socio-pathological phenomenon, the behavior of criminals, and the social institutions evolved to respond to crime. Includes instruction in the theory of crime, psychological and social bases of criminal behavior, social value systems and the theory of punishment, criminal law and criminal justice systems, penology, rehabilitation and recidivism, studies of specific types of crime, social attitudes and policy, and applications to specific issues in law enforcement administration and policy.

For these majors, the high school student should have a broad background in college preparation courses in natural and social sciences, English, and mathematics.

The department also offers minors in Sociology and Criminal Justice. The Criminal Justice minor may be taken by students in any of our majors. Special advisement for students in any major who are interested in criminal justice or probation may be obtained from the department’s Criminology coordinator. Detailed information is available from the department office.

Sociology majors are invited to participate in a chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta, the National Honor Society in Sociology.
