NTR 5250 - A Life Course Approach to Nutrition Disease Prevention, and Treatment (3) Discuss developmental physiology and cellular growth and differentiation from pre-conception to old age interact with the etiology and prevention of disease. Focus on a life-course approach to life-long influences on the development of disease and evidence-based treatment. Pathophysiology of selected medical problems throughout the lifecycle with specific attention to nutrition needs and treatment as part of evidence-based practice. Advanced clinical nutrition applications in acute and chronic diseases and review of the nutritionally relevant chronic diseases with aging. Oral presentation and discussion of the scientific literature related to the life cycle. Acute and chronic disease conditions throughout the lifecycle will be explored through lectures, case discussions, assigned readings, programmed learning guides, and class presentations. Topics include, but are not limited to: critical thinking, pediatric nutrition, clinical basis of disease processes, and medical, surgical, and diet therapies for acute and chronic disease in adults and pediatrics, enteral and parenteral nutrition, malnutrition and high-risk conditions including cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal and liver disease, critical care, HIV/AIDS, and oncology.
Corequisite(s): Admission into the MS in Applied Nutrition program. Prerequisite(s): NTR 4440 , NTR 5240 , or consent of instructor. A background or experience in biochemistry, nutrition, and metabolism is recommended.
