MAT 1940 - Mathematical Concepts for Elementary School Teachers (4) [GE 2] Deep analysis of the Number and Quantity Domain of the Common Core Standards in Mathematics for K-8 students. Deep understanding of numbers systems, the operations among them, their meaning and different algorithms that can be used. Identification of the conceptual foundation for these algorithms. Modeling of the Standards of Mathematical Practice. Emphasis on the use of different representations and different models for mathematical ideas. Discussion of the role of precise language and notation in the development of mathematical thinking. Analysis of different ways of argumentation in mathematics. Prerequisite(s): Category I, Category II, C or better in a GE Sub-area 2/B4 course, or C- or better or CR in MAT 1900 or MAT 1051. Grading Basis: Graded Only Repeat for Credit: May be taken only once Course Category: Service Course, GE Course
