CE 3501L - Structural Design Laboratory (1) Evaluation of loading demand on buildings constructed using three primary structural materials: steel, concrete and wood. The essential concepts of structural design are introduced and applied to evaluating demand on a prototypical five-story building constructed using these different materials. The construction assemblies are developed and evaluated and hierarchy and load path of vertical and lateral load resisting systems is investigated. Finally, using acquired knowledge, a case study of the selected existing buildings is performed.
