General Education Course Lists


Certain professional programs include GE course patterns not listed here. Students should consult the curriculum of the specific major to identify the exact GE requirement for the major. The symbol (+) indicates that a course may be taken on a credit/no credit basis. Please refer to the corresponding major section in this catalog for prerequisites and a detailed description of general education courses listed below.

AREA A-English Language Communication and Critical Thinking: 9 units:


Students must take one course from each sub-area.

1. Oral Communication:


Student must earn a grade of C- or better to receive credit in A1.

2. Written Communication:


GE Area A2 can be satisfied either through a single course (ENG 1103 /1103M), a two-course “Stretch Composition” sequence (ENG 1100 /1100M and ENG 1101 /1101M), or a two-course series (IGE 1100  and IGE 1200 ). Student must earn a grade of C- or better to receive credit in A2.

Students must complete ENG 1100  or ENG 1100M before ENG 1101  or ENG 1101M.

** Students must complete IGE 1100  before enrolling in and completing IGE 1200  to receive GE Area A2 credit. For more information on the IGE program, please see the Interdisciplinary General Education  program.

3. Critical Thinking:


Student must earn a grade of C- or better to receive credit in A3.

AREA B-Scientific Inquiry and Quantitative Reasoning: 12 units


To fulfill all B area requirements, students must take at least one course from each sub-area, for a total of 12 units.

Laboratory courses are marked with an “L” following the course number. At least one laboratory course from GE Sub-areas B1 or B2 must be taken to fulfill the GE Sub-area B3 requirement. Activity courses, which are marked with an “A” following the course number, do not fulfill the GE Sub-area B3 requirement.

* Students must have completed MAT 1051  and co-enroll in MAT 1051A  before taking MAT 1052 .

** Students must co-enroll in MAT 1055A .

MAT 1050  can alternatively be satisfied either through a single course MAT 1055  or a two-course “Stretch College Algebra” sequence (MAT 1051  and MAT 1052 ).

*** Students must have completed STA 1201  and co-enroll in STA 1201A  before taking STA 1202 .

**** Students must co-enroll in STA 1205A  

STA 1200  can alternatively be satisfied either through a single course STA 1205  or a two-course “Stretch Statistics with Applications” sequence (STA 1201  and STA 1202 ).

5. Science and Technology Synthesis (upper division):


Students must complete all GE lower-division requirements in Areas A and B before they take any GE B5 Synthesis course. Select at least 3 units of coursework from the following list:

AREA C-Arts and Humanities: 12 units


Students are required to take at least 3 units from each sub-area and 3 additional units from sub-areas 1 and/or 2. A minimum of 12 units must be completed. See also the Interdisciplinary General Education Program (IGE) Section, which is the pattern recommended for students in Engineering and Architecture.

3. Arts and Humanities Synthesis (upper division):


Students must complete all GE lower-division requirements in Areas A and C before they take any GE C3 Synthesis course. Select one course from the following list:

AREA D-Social Sciences: 9 units

Use of Completion of Basic Military Training Toward Satisfaction of Area E:


Students who completed basic military training (boot camp) will be granted 3 units of GE Area E credit. 

Interdisciplinary Courses:


These courses will satisfy the requirement in one of subareas listed. Students must complete all lower-division courses in Area A and relevant subareas before they take an upper-division Interdisciplinary Synthesis course.
