Offered by: College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences, Sociology Department

The Sociology major, which is housed in the Department of Sociology, is designed to provide a substantial foundation in theoretical, methodological, and content areas of sociology, leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. In addition to a solid introduction in these content areas, students receive specific training in research methods and statistical analysis, and in the many practical applications of sociological theory. The Sociology major has two subplans: Social Work and General Sociology. The major is an excellent preparation for graduate study in Sociology, or Public Administration, and for professional studies in law or social work. It also provides a very good background for entry level positions in management, in both public and private sectors.

The curriculum matrix for the degree program may be found here. The curriculum matrix is the alignment of courses (curriculum) with the desired goals and student learning outcomes of the program. It shows what is taught and how these outcomes are achieved through the completion of the degree program.

NOTE: No double majoring is allowed within the department because there is too much curricular overlap.  However, students can minor across the department, but are not allowed to double count courses between the major and minor, unless a particular course is required of both the major and minor. Any major can minor in SW except general sociology majors - they would declare the SW emphasis.
