Bilingual Authorization

The Bilingual Authorization is an added authorization to a basic or initial credential to provide specialized instruction to individuals for whom English is a second language. Specifically it authorizes instruction for 1) English Language Development (ELD) in preschool, K-12, and adults (restrictions apply to holders of Children’s Center Permits, Child Development Permits, and Designated Subjects Teaching Credentials), 2) Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered in English (SDAIE) in the subjects and grade levels authorized by the prerequisite credential or permit, and 3) instruction for primary language development and content instruction delivered in the primary language in the subjects and grade levels authorized by the prerequisite credential or permit.

Bilingual Authorization certification is available at Cal Poly Pomona in Spanish and Asian Languages (Mandarin and Cantonese). The Chinese methods course is offered in collaboration with CSUs in our region.

Admissions Process

  1. Complete the Online Program Orientation. Print out out a confirmation at the conclusion of the session.
  2. Schedule and Entrance Interview with the Coordinator of the Bilingual Program.
  3. Following the interview, complete the reading examination in the Spanish or Asian Languages (Mandarin and Cantonese).
  4. Complete and submit the Bilingual Program Entrance Essay in Spanish or Asian Languages (Mandarin and Cantonese).

Coursework and Testing Requirements (Must be completed prior to Clinical Practice)

1. Complete two classes that meet the Culture Requirement - All candidates must take EWS 360 Cultures of Childhood (4)  .  Candidate must also take one Language-specific course.

  1. Spanish - EWS 202 Chicano/Latino Experience (4)  or EWS 402 Chicano/Latino Contemporary Issues (4) .
  2. Asian Language - EWS 301 Ethnic Identity (4) .

2. Pedagogy/Methods Requirement

  1. Spanish - TED 515/515A Bilingual Education: Reading, Language Arts and Content Instruction in the Primary Language (Spanish or Korean) (4/1)  (lecture component).
  2. Asian Languages - Either successful completion of a mthods in Chinese course at a nearby CSU or passing the CSET LOTE Section IV.  It is advisable to take the course.

3. Language Requirement - For more information on CSET LOTE language exams go to http://www.ctel.nesinc.com

  1. Spanish - Pass the CSET Languages other than English (LOTE) exam Section III for Spanish.
  2. Asian Languages - Pass the CSET Language other than English (LOTE) exam Section III for Mandarin or Cantonese.

Clinical Practice

  1. Enroll in TED 499/499A/499L Special Topics for Upper Division Students (1-4/1-4/1-4)  (lecture component - 1 unit) concurrently with Clinical Practice Blocks 1 and 2 to participate in the Online Bilingual Practice Seminars
  2. During Clinical Practice, candidates are placed in a bilingual setting and supervised by a bilingual supervisor.
