General Education Requirements

The educational objective of the Electrical Engineering Program is to graduate Electrical Engineering students who:

Are successfully practicing in the Electrical Engineering profession with solid theoretical and hands-on knowledge of Circuits, Electronics, Computer Software, Hardware, Control Systems, Communications, and Electrical Power.
Contribute to society through their undergraduate preparation, whether they work in the engineering profession or they decide to pursue an alternate career.
Pursue personal success by way of ethical and responsible behavior.
Understand the challenges of a dynamically and globalized changing world and are willing to adapt their skills through continuous learning and self improvement.
Master effective communication skills to obtain success either working individually or within a team environment.

Students are afforded the opportunity to specialize at the junior and senior level by choosing from a number of courses in the following areas: Power, Electronics including Analog and Digital Devices, Controls and Instrumentation including Robotics and Biomedical, Communications & Signal Processing including Analog and Digital, Digital Systems and Illumination Engineering.

Required Core Courses for Major: 78 units

Required of all students. A 2.0 cumulative GPA is required in core courses in order to receive a degree in the major.

Elective Core Courses: 19 units

ECE Upper Division Electives (19)

12 of the 19 units must be 400 level courses. If a course has an associated lab, both must be taken.

Required Support Courses: 42 units

The following major support courses should be used to satisfy the indicated GE requirements. If these courses are not used to satisfy GE, the total units to degree may be more than 194 units.

Interdisciplinary General Education: 32 units

An alternate pattern for partial fulfillment of GE Areas A, C, D, and E available for students is the Interdisciplinary General Education (IGE) program. Students should see an advisor for specific GE coursework required by their major. Students must be exempt from or score at least 147 on the EPT to qualify for IGE. Please refer to the University Catalog General Education Program section for additional information.

Graduation Writing Test

All persons who receive undergraduate degrees from Cal Poly Pomona must pass the Graduation Writing Test (GWT). The test must be taken by the quarter following completion of 120 units for undergraduates.
