Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Index of Academic Programs

Offered by: College of Education and Integrative Studies, Education Department

The MA subplan/option in Special Education offers advanced preparation for teachers in leadership, specialized curriculum and instruction for students with disabilities, program development and successfully meeting the challenges of teaching in a diverse society. Based on the candidate’s academic background, requirements for the Special Education Subplan/Option are collaboratively determined by the candidate and advisor. The master’s candidate and assigned advisors complete an M.A. program contract that defines the learning goals to be accomplished during the master’s study. The contract must be approved by the department chair and the dean. Courses are selected from eligible Preliminary Credential courses and other M.A. options. Course substitutions may occur for courses no longer offered.

To complete the degree candidates are required to complete the research methods sequence as they develop and finalize their thesis or project. In lieu of the thesis or project, Special Education master’s candidates may choose to take a comprehensive exam that assesses their knowledge and skills on the goals defined in the degree contract.
