Environmental Health Specialist Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Index of Academic Programs

Offered by: Cal Poly Pomona, University Interdisciplinary Programs

The minor provides majors in the colleges of Agriculture and Science background to help prepare them for careers in the California Department of Public Health. The courses are intended to help students meet requirements for becoming a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) and career opportunities that require this certification.  For information on requirements to become a REHS go to: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/REHS. Increasing awareness of pollution and other health-related environmental problems has led to a demand for specialists to enforce and administer laws governing water, food, and air contamination, noise, land use planning, occupational health hazards, and animal vectors of disease.

The 28 units of basic science course requirements would be met by students from several majors in Science and Agriculture therefore reducing significantly the total number of units those students would need to complete the minor. Students interested in more information may contact Dr. John Chan in the Biological Sciences Department, College of Science or Dr. Martin Sancho-Madriz in the Human Nutrition and Food Science Department, Don B. Huntley College of Agriculture.

Total required for program: 65-70 units
