The graphic design degree offers students the opportunity to study a range of visual communication problems. Students learn to work creatively in typography, print, identity, illustration, packaging, web design, motion graphics, and environmental graphic design. Support courses in communications, advertising, and marketing are recommended.
The department trains students to keep abreast of changing technology. Due to the department’s unique location, a wide variety of internships in Southern California studios and industries are available for upper division students.

Required Core Courses for Major: 76 units

*If course(s) is taken to satisfy GE requirements, then student will need to complete additional approved units for Required Core.
Required Support Courses: 15 units
Elective Support Courses: 21 units
Students must complete a total of 21 units in two areas:
- Courses in Fine Art and/or Art History (between 8-13 units)
- Courses in Graphic Design (between 8-13 units)
Students must complete a minimum of 8 units per area. Elective courses for each area are listed on the curriculum sheet.
Approved Elective Courses in Fine Art and Art History: 8-13 units
Approved Elective Courses in Graphic Design: 8-13 units
Students are required to take courses/units in studies directly in/or related to Graphic Design in order to meet the B.F.A requirements.
If you are interested in print-based design in 2D/3D: ART 180A , ART 450A , ART 453A , ART 454A .
If you are interested in digital media, and motion graphics: ART 347A , ART 356A , ART 456A .
Note(s):
All major courses (core and support) must be passed with a grade of “C-” or better.
The total curriculum for the bachelor’s degree must include 60 units of upper division courses. General Education Requirements: 68 units

For an alternative and interdisciplinary way to complete some of their GE requirements, students may choose the Interdisciplinary General Education program, see below.
Interdisciplinary General Education: 32 units
An alternate pattern for partial fulfillment of GE Areas A, C, D, and E available for students is the Interdisciplinary General Education (IGE) program. Students should see an advisor for specific GE coursework required by their major. Students must be exempt from or score at least 147 on the EPT to qualify for IGE. Please refer to the University Catalog General Education Program section for additional information.
How IGE fulfills General Education Requirements:
American Institutions: 8 units
Courses that satisfy this requirement may also satisfy GE Area D1.
American Cultural Perspectives Requirement: 4 units
Refer to the University Catalog General Education Program section for a list of courses that satisfy this requirement. Course may also satisfy major, minor, GE, or unrestricted elective requirements.
Graduation Writing Test
All persons who receive undergraduate degrees from Cal Poly Pomona must pass the Graduation Writing Test (GWT). The test must be taken by the quarter following completion of 120 units for undergraduates.
