Offered by: College of Education and Integrative Studies, Interdisciplinary General Education

The Interdisciplinary General Education curriculum provides an integrated, interdisciplinary, discussion-based approach to learning about the humanities, social sciences, and arts. IGE is an alternative pathway to satisfy 21 units of the University GE requirements in areas A, C, and D. Students ready for GE area A2 (categories I and II) are eligible to enroll in IGE 1100  in the Fall. Students ready for GE area A2 with support (categories III and IV) need to enroll in the English stretch courses with support for GE area A2 credit and can enroll in either IGE 1100  or IGE 1200  for GE area C2 credit. Students who have fulfilled GE area A2 (category I) can also enroll in IGE 1100  or IGE 1200  for GE area C2 credit. Students should see an advisor for specific GE coursework required by their major. The seven-course IGE pathway has the following common Learning Outcomes:

  • Effective Communication
  • Critical Thinking
  • Historical, Social, and Multicultural Understanding
  • Understanding and Appreciation of Aesthetic Experiences
  • Articulation of Values
  • Information Literacy
  • Integrative Learning

Students must complete an IGE yearly sequence to earn general education credit. Single IGE classes do not fulfill GE requirements, unless using AP or IB credit or using authorized substitutions. Students who choose to leave IGE and complete their remaining general education requirements through other University departments should do so only at the end of a yearly sequence, e.g. after IGE 1200  or IGE 2200 . Students leaving IGE should seek advisement on how to fulfill remaining general education requirements. There is also some flexibility in the program based on the needs of various majors.  See your major advisor or the IGE program office for information. The IGE program is open to any qualified student. IGE students may substitute AP or IB credit for up to 2 courses in the IGE Program. For more information, see departmental advisors or the IGE Department Chair. Please refer to the University Programs section in the course catalog for IGE course descriptions.

3000-level IGE Upper Division Synthesis courses (except for IGE 3100 ) are open to all upper-division CPP students, regardless of whether or not they have taken the previous IGE courses.

Total required for program: 21 units

How IGE fulfills General Education Requirements:

Individual courses in the IGE program can satisfy either GE subarea with which they are associated and do not need to be taken in sequence (e.g., IGE 2100  can count for either GE Area C1 or C2, and does not require students also take IGE 2200 ). This does not apply to GE Area A2, which still requires the 2-course sequence of IGE 1100  and IGE 1200  passed with a 1.7 average to satisfy the A2 requirement.*

*On April 20, 2022, the Cal Poly Pomona General Education Committee affirmed that individual IGE courses in the IGE program can satisfy either GE subarea for the yearly sequence with the exception of GE subarea A2. (revised July 12, 2024)

Year Completion of IGE Courses Satisfies GE Requirements
First IGE 1100 , IGE 1200   A2 and C2
Second/Third IGE 2100 , IGE 2200
IGE 2300 , IGE 2400
C1 and C2
D1 and D3
Third/Fourth IGE 3100   C3 or D4

Remaining GE to be completed. See your major department for advisement:
