The mission of the Psychology Department is to prepare students for success at school, work, home, and society through engagement in education, research, and professional activities. The program enriches understanding of behavior-biological, emotional, social, and cognitive-while fostering scientific literacy, knowledge, communication, and practical application.
Rooted in the university’s “learn-by-doing” philosophy, the department emphasizes experiential learning and academic rigor. Students engage directly in faculty‑mentored research across clinical, social, developmental, cognitive, and physiological areas. From sophomore-level methods courses to senior capstone research, the program nurtures both analytical skills and practical know-how. Strong emphasis is placed on diversity, equity, and inclusion, integrated across coursework and graduate training. Organizationally, the department cultivates a professional culture by layering theoretical instruction with applied experiences in labs, research, and community contexts.
Psychology majors gain access to manifold opportunities: student-faculty labs, year-long senior research projects, and the Lowell Overton Undergraduate Research Symposium which celebrates student scholarship. Psi Chi, the national honor society, offers academic recognition and professional networking. Additional offerings include internships, mentoring, scholarships, and leadership roles fostering well-rounded academic and career development.
